USCB and partners expand Pritchard's Island research: sea turtles, shorebirds, soundscapes and student internships
Summary
University of South Carolina Beaufort researchers described rapid expansion of research at Pritchard's Island and Richards/Pritchard projects: sea-turtle monitoring, shorebird and bat acoustic studies, trash and invasive-species work, plus artist residencies and internships for widening student research opportunities.

USCB faculty and researchers briefed partners on a rapid expansion of work at Pritchard’s Island, the University’s largely undeveloped research laboratory island in the estuary. Dr. Warren and Dr. Mercer Brugler (USCB) said the island hosted more than 18 research projects in the past year and described student-led monitoring: daily sea-turtle nest monitoring and relocations during nesting season; camera-trap studies with partner organizations; shorebird and dune-plant research; acoustic monitors for bats and underwater soundscapes to compare fish-spawning aggregations; and debris surveys in partnership with the Smithsonian’s Ocean Traveler project.
The researchers said USCB has purchased a Carolina skiff and a fleet of kayaks and is expanding paid summer internships (the university has funded and paid interns and provides housing), and the program is attracting international collaborators. They also noted an artist residency program pairing art students with marine biology students to create art–science products.
Why it matters: Partners said Pritchard’s Island offers a rare, largely undisturbed barrier-island laboratory with opportunities for long-term coastal resilience research and comparative baseline data ahead of offshore developments. Local officials and conservation partners may use the data for shore protection and species monitoring.
Quote (selected): "We have more than 18 research projects going on at Pritchard's Island; we are out there every single day for 6 months (sea-turtle work)" — USCB researcher.
Ending: Researchers invited municipal partners to coordinate on logistics and volunteer support and said they seek continued funding partnerships for expanded monitoring and student internships.
