Committee finalizes mural placement, requests skyline and local-flora adjustments

Members discussed using recognizable local landmarks and local plant species (participants suggested azaleas and daylilies) so the mural reads specifically as Beaufort and not a generic Lowcountry skyline. They recommended including “South Carolina” or the abbreviation “SC” beneath ‘Beaufort’ so the location is clear in photos.
The artist (referred to in the meeting as Julia) is tentatively scheduled to paint in April or May (committee cited both an April or May window and a specific May 6–12 possibility, depending on the artist’s schedule). Committee members said the artist is currently in a three-week apprenticeship and will provide a final rendering when available; they expected the artist to include protective clear coat and signature placement. Members noted that painting the building’s right-side wall with a complementary solid color (even if not an additional mural) would be preferable to leaving the surface unpainted; they observed that the right side was not included in the artist’s estimate.
No formal vote or funding decision was recorded at the meeting. The committee agreed staff will pass the requested changes and skyline photos to the artist so the final design can be completed and returned to the committee for approval before painting.
