Staff outlines next steps for Southside Park Phase 2; council member to be included in stakeholder talks

Discussion during the Feb. 11 consent-agenda review clarified that the City of Beaufort has not yet signed a final engagement letter for Phase 2 of Southside Park and is continuing stakeholder outreach before locking the scope.
City staff said they have met with original task-force members and narrowed the park portion under consideration to playing fields, sidewalks and a parking area; staff also scheduled a meeting with the dog-park group to review their needs. "We wanted to engage with the original stakeholders in the original Southside Park task force and different stakeholders in the parts of the park such as the dog park to get their input to determine exactly what the scope of phase 2 will include before we enter into that engagement letter with the engineer," staff said.
A council member who represented the ward during the initial task force requested inclusion in the upcoming meetings; staff agreed to include that member in email communications and stakeholder discussions.
Why it matters: Phase 2 design decisions will determine use of park acreage, circulation and amenities. Council discussion indicated staff is prioritizing public input from those who participated in earlier planning and from organized user groups.
