Colbert said the department met with the city administrator and requested funding for one officer and one dispatcher; he said he expected those budget requests to proceed without issue. He said the department also requested marked patrol vehicles and is building out a new CAD/RMS system, which he expects to go live in the next couple of months.
On activity, Colbert reported February totals: 4,784 calls for service, 495 traffic stops, 230 traffic citations, 28 minor possession-of-alcohol citations, 30 noise complaints and one noise citation. He also noted that Maritzabel Reyes was sworn in as a sergeant on March 3.
When asked about patrol vehicles, Colbert said the department prefers Ford Interceptors and has experienced more issues with Chevrolet Tahoes. He did not provide a timeline for vehicle deliveries beyond the budget process. The department did not provide a staffing timeline for filling all vacancies.
Colbert said the department is training officers and expects one new officer to begin field training in April. He described the new CAD/RMS as a “pretty nice system” and said it should improve record-keeping and dispatch operations when it goes live.
No formal action or vote was taken on the requests during the meeting. Attendees asked clarifying questions about vehicle types and staffing; Colbert answered during the department update.
