The North Myrtle Beach City Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution to purchase the professional office building at 1006 Sixth Avenue South, a property staff said is contiguous to the city campus and could house the information-technology department under one roof.
City staff member Ryan described office-space constraints and said consolidating IT in the purchased building would centralize that department and free room elsewhere in city facilities. The purchase price cited at the meeting was $700,000; staff said the city had an appraisal from roughly 18 months earlier and that no real estate agent represented the seller. Staff also noted a possible operational saving: moving IT could allow the city to end a lease on an offsite Santee Cooper building currently costing about $3,000 per month, or roughly $36,000 per year, depending on final layout and needs.
A resident, identified in the record as Jolene Popper, told council she thought the purchase was a good opportunity and asked whether a real estate agent negotiated the price; staff said the negotiation was conducted between city negotiators and the property owner and that attorneys would handle closing. Council voted to approve the resolution by unanimous voice vote.
Ending: Council approved the purchase on a unanimous voice vote. Staff said details of occupancy and any reconfiguration would be addressed after closing.
