HANAHAN, S.C. — The Hanahan City Council voted March 11 to approve a mutual aid agreement with the Charleston County Aviation Authority to provide and receive assistance during large-scale emergencies.
Chief Gepard of the Hanahan Police Department presented the agreement, describing it as a reciprocal, no-cost arrangement that would allow the city to send personnel and equipment to assist aviation authority incidents and receive like assistance when requested.
"It is free. It doesn't cost us anything other than manpower hours in the event they have a large scale catastrophe or emergency, and they request our assistance," Chief Gepard told the council. He said the agreement covers both equipment and personnel and follows the model of other mutual-aid pacts the department has entered.
Council members asked clarifying questions about the type of resources to be shared. A council member asked whether the arrangement covered fire trucks and EMS; Chief Gepard confirmed that it covers equipment and personnel.
A motion to approve the memorandum of understanding was made and seconded and passed by roll call. The council recorded ayes from Council member Crowley, Spurlock, Colton Shea, Sally, Dyson, Mayor Pro Tem Hedgepaugh and Mayor Christie Rainwater.
The public materials presented at the meeting did not include the full text of the final executed agreement; Chief Gepard said the arrangement follows previously established mutual-aid agreements and emphasized there would be no direct cost to the city beyond staff time.
