Hanahan honors David Wilson as Citizen of the Year and Lt. John Episcopo as Employee of the Year

Mayor Christy Rainwater and department leaders presented awards at the Jan. 14 council meeting recognizing David Wilson as the city’s 2024 Citizen of the Year and Lieutenant John Episcopo as the Fire Department’s 2024 Employee of the Year.
The mayor and Park and Recreation Director Danny Stewart credited Wilson—who works for Dominion Energy and volunteers across multiple departments—with long-term volunteer service supporting the city’s recreation programs (umpiring, equipment donation, batting cages, district umpire-in-charge duties and hurricane coordination). Stewart said Wilson helped build pitching mounds and assisted with youth sports logistics and that his contributions “help our rec department because we know youth officials are really hard to find.” The mayor announced the city will create a plaque honoring the Citizen of the Year and presented a certificate and a gift card at the meeting.
Lieutenant John Episcopo was recognized by Chief Rick (speaker identified in the transcript) and others for his contributions to the fire department, including organizing off-duty events, leading the haunted firehouse and other community engagement initiatives, and serving as president of the fire department’s one‑percent fund. The chief read a written nomination describing Episcopo as dependable and committed; a plaque will hang in the hallway and a certificate was presented during the ceremony.
Both recognitions were ceremonial and no council votes or budgetary actions were required.
