The city announced funding and approval to proceed with the Old Hanahan Trail project at the Jan. 14 council meeting. Assistant to the City Administrator Cam Spencer said the project secured a CHATS (Charleston Area Transportation Study) Transportation Alternatives (TA) set-aside grant of $1,156,000 and received final approval from SCDOT in December. Total project investment is $1,445,000.
Spencer described the project as a 1.46-mile trail through the Power Line Greenway adjacent to Murray Drive, stretching from Bishop Road to MWV Capstone Park. The trail is intended to improve nonmotorized connectivity—linking parks, schools and amenities—and to provide a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists while encouraging economic and recreational activity along the corridor.
Spencer said the trail will reduce vehicle trips, support a walkable and bike‑friendly network and that staff can provide a digital copy of project plans to council as requested. He described the award as competitive and thanked staff and council members who participated in the grant presentation.
No vote was required for the announcement; future council actions will be required for contract awards, right-of-way actions or local match expenditures if any are needed.
