Council approves $1,000/month counteroffer for downtown Verdon parking lease
Summary
After negotiation, council authorized staff to offer $1,000 per month (down from the owner's $1,800 proposal) to lease the Verdon parking lots for downtown public parking; the council passed the counteroffer unanimously and asked staff to continue negotiations and remove a disputed indemnification clause before the business meeting.

Simpsonville staff reported the Verdon trust had proposed a substantial increase to the city’s long-standing lease for the downtown gravel parking lot near West Curtis and Maple. The owner’s proposal listed $1,800 per month; the city currently pays $650 per month to lease that lot.
Council debated the value of the parking, parity with the Temple Baptist lot (for which the city currently pays $1,000/month and receives partial reimbursement from a nearby business), and the risk that approving $1,800 would prompt other private lessors to seek similar increases. Council member Pinkerton moved a counteroffer of $1,000 per month and Council member Hutchings seconded; the amendment to counteroffer $1,000 carried 7–0 and the council approved moving the counteroffer forward. Administrator Graceley said staff will return with revised contract language for the business meeting and will negotiate removal of an indemnification clause requested by the owner.
Staff estimated the Verdon lot provides roughly 55 stalls; current funding for downtown parking leases is drawn from hospitality/accommodations-tax revenue.
