Resident urges more 'regreening' in redevelopment to reduce impervious surfaces and flood risk

Craig Murtha, a Largo resident, urged the commission during public comment to revive a ‘‘regreening’’ approach to redevelopment so sites are greener after redevelopment than before. Murtha recalled observing regreening in Clearwater around the turn of the century and said he has not seen recent redevelopment projects in Largo leave more green or pervious surface than the prior use.
Murtha said increasing vegetative capacity and green infrastructure in redevelopment, parks and floodable park areas is important as the area expects heavier rains. “We need to really start thinking greener than we are,” he said, urging the city to plan for larger-capacity green spaces in future redevelopment.
No commissioners moved to refer the comment for staff study during the meeting and no formal action was recorded. The comment was made as part of the public comment period and not during an agenda item on land use or stormwater.
