Resident requests canopy, crosswalk and sidewalk at busy Highway 20/Percy Brown corner; council notes DOTD coordination

Darlene Williams, a resident of 312 Linda Ann Avenue, asked the council during the March 26 public-comment period to install a covered canopy at the public-transit stop at the corner of Percy Brown Road (Highway 648) and Highway 20 in Thibodaux, to add a marked pedestrian crosswalk across that corner, and to build a sidewalk along Percy Brown so pedestrians traveling between a nearby trailer park and a neighborhood Walmart do not walk or bike in the roadway.
Williams described multiple nearby businesses (a Walmart Neighborhood Market and a Citgo station) and said people wait in the rain at the bus stop and sometimes stand in the gas-station area; she told the council she has seen people struck at that location and named multiple specific safety concerns for children and seniors who walk or bike along Highway 648 to reach shopping and transit.
A council member responding during the meeting said staff have previously attempted to obtain Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) approval for a shelter at that location and that parish staff plan to reapply and to discuss crosswalk options with DOTD during the parish’s quarterly meeting. The council member said sidewalk options would be evaluated as well.
No formal commitment of funding or a construction schedule was made during the public-comment period; the speaker and council members were advised to coordinate a written request so the parish can prioritize the site for sidewalk and crosswalk work and to resubmit any DOTD application for a shelter.
