Sabatini’s transparency resolution deferred to full board after discussion; staff to respond to governor’s letter
Summary
Commissioner Sabatini’s motion to adopt a resolution endorsing county cooperation with a gubernatorial transparency initiative was withdrawn March 25 and the item was moved to the next board meeting so the full five-member Board of County Commissioners can vote.
Commissioner Sabatini introduced an item (tab 20) urging the board to adopt a resolution saying Lake County would publicly state willingness to open financial records to the governor’s office. Sabatini argued the county could gain political advantage by being an early adopter and said the resolution’s text would include the chairman and county clerk names and was short and legal in form.
County staff (Jennifer) and Clerk Gary Cooney told the board they had received a letter from the Executive Office of the Governor requesting financial information with a deadline of April 8; Cooney said the clerk’s office has already drafted a response and will provide certifications the county files annually that demonstrate it has met fiscal tests dating back to the 2018-19 fiscal year. Staff said the governor’s request would be handled through the state-level process and would not mean direct federal involvement.
Chair Campione was absent and had requested the item be tabled until the full five-member board could vote; after discussion Commissioner Sabatini retracted his motion and the board agreed to place the resolution on the agenda for the next board meeting (Tuesday) so all members may weigh in. No formal vote on the resolution occurred on March 25.
The discussion included repeated assurances from staff that the county routinely certifies its financial health to the state and that the clerk’s office would transmit the requested records. The board did not change the draft resolution’s text during the March 25 discussion and took no final action on tab 20.
