The Design Review Committee on March 27 approved an internally illuminated projecting sign for 215 East Main Street (the Eliston Building) after staff concluded the sign complies with projection, sidewalk-clearance and illumination standards.
Emily (staff member, Community and Economic Development) presented the application: the sign is a two-sided round aluminum cabinet, 32 inches square (7.11 square feet) projecting 38 inches from the facade and illuminated by white LEDs that will light only the logo and text, not the entire sign face. The building is a contributing circa-1912 masonry commercial structure in the Munn Park Historic District; the current storefront was reconstructed in 2017 following a 2016 design review approval.
Staff advised the committee that typical cabinet signs (a fully illuminated face) are prohibited under the Dixieland CRA commercial corridor design guidelines used for signage in the historic districts, but staff determined this sign is not a cabinet sign because only the letters and logo will be illuminated while the background will remain painted aluminum. The committee heard no public objections and approved the sign as submitted in a roll-call vote.
Ending: The applicant (Andy Snyder, Dixie Signs) may proceed to permitting; staff will confirm final installation details comply with the approved drawings and illumination approach.
