Sun 'n Fun preview: Blue Angels, F-35 variants and a 20-year campus plan for Lakeland airport

Gene Conrad, president and CEO of Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo, briefed the Lakeland City Commission on the event and a long-term plan for the Sun 'n Fun campus at the Lakeland airport.
Conrad said the expo is roughly two weeks away and expected to bring more than 200,000 attendees and more than 500 exhibitors from about 60 countries. Opening-night concerts and daily air shows are planned: the air show is scheduled to run each day at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and night air shows are set for Wednesday and Saturday beginning at 7 p.m., with a 25-minute fireworks and pyro finale choreographed to music. Conrad said military demonstration teams scheduled to appear include the Blue Angels and several other services'equipped demos, plus aircraft such as the A-10 and planned Harrier appearances.
Conrad described near-term site improvements including plans to "glass in" the outdoor pavilion of the Florida Air Museum to create a flexible 300'to'400-person event space and free the museum interior for exhibit upgrades. He showed renderings and a fly-through of a reimagined museum with interactive exhibits (including footage provided by NOAA for a cockpit simulator), a destination aviation playground, a hot-air-balloon simulator and a Flight Sim experience hosted by the Beulah Restoration Center.
He also presented a 20-year campus concept tied to an airport master-plan item: a proposed parallel runway identified in the airport's 2020 master plan. Conrad said the airport currently handles about 150,000 aircraft operations a year, putting it among the nation's busier general-aviation facilities. The Sun 'n Fun team worked with airport staff, Visit Central Florida and the Aerospace Center for Excellence to reimagine campus layout if the runway were built; proposed changes included relocating campgrounds, creating two new air-conditioned exhibit buildings, adding a military static ramp and revising crowd circulation and parking layouts. Conrad said the plan is intended for submittal into the airport layout plan and to the FAA, and emphasized the timeline is long-term (he said the runway could occur in 8'10 years) but that incremental improvements will begin sooner.
Conrad highlighted crowd-management features and alternative viewing areas to reduce congestion around the Warbird Ramp, including secondary viewing areas named The Island and The Sandbar, plus shade and seating for families. He noted a volunteer base of more than 3,000 people who support the event annually and reiterated that the net proceeds fund Aerospace Center for Excellence programs throughout the year.
Commissioners who spoke praised the event and the campus plan. Commissioner McLeod said the emphasis on youth programming and education (the Florida Air Museum, Skylab Innovation Center and the Aerospace Center for Excellence) helps local workforce and education pipelines; Commissioner McCarroll and others thanked Conrad and Sun 'n Fun staff for the economic and educational benefits.
Ending: Conrad encouraged commissioners and residents to attend; the event schedule and public materials will be available to the public in advance of the April dates.
