Mayor proclaims April 2025 Zero Waste Action Month; Home Resource reports more than 2 million pounds diverted

Mayor Andrea Davis and Missoula County proclaimed April 2025 as Zero Waste Action Month and recognized community partners and events promoting the city’s Zero by 50 waste-reduction pathway.
Kelly Hess of Home Resource addressed the council and described a month-long schedule of events organized with business and community partners, including a city-focused week on food-waste prevention. Hess said Home Resource’s diversion activity focuses primarily on building materials and that the organization “surpassed the 2,000,000-pound mark of diversion from the landfill” last year.
Hess also reported event-specific outcomes: at the county fair Home Resource worked with vendors and city organizers to require compostable serviceware and to secure a local compost outlet, producing an 83% diversion rate and diverting more than 50,000 pounds of waste from the landfill at that event. The organization also provided diversion services at community events including the Missoula Marathon and other festivals.
The mayor thanked Home Resource and committed to sharing a calendar of Zero Waste Action Month events via the city website; staff said the city would post the Home Resource calendar and make printed copies available.
The council’s proclamation does not establish new regulations or appropriations; it recognizes local activities and encourages public participation.
