The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers (HACFM) marked its 65th anniversary during the March 3 council meeting and provided an update on major capital investments and redevelopment work.
Marcia Davis, HACFM executive director, told the council the authority serves roughly 6,000 residents across Lee County and owns more than 1,000 units. She described more than $150 million in capital awards received over recent years that support rehabilitation and new construction, and she outlined several projects in the pipeline:
- Legacy Point (Choice Neighborhoods Initiative phase 2): planned 151 mixed-income units with a mix of market-rate, subsidized and low-income housing tax credit units; CDBG-DR funds will act as gap financing. - Lewis Laddermill (name chosen for a new development recognizing an early African American inventor tied to Edison's team): construction underway; projected first-occupancy in first quarter 2026. - Strayhorn Place: 80 replacement units for Royal Palm Towers; the authority has permits and gap financing in place. - 5300 Summerlin (New Horizons): a 230-unit workforce housing project funded in part by a recent $43 million bond issuance from the Lee County Housing Finance Authority; buildings will include backup generators and is designed to accommodate additional disabled residents if needed.
Davis described ongoing family self-sufficiency and jobs-plus programs and the authority’s role as a major payer to private landlords in the county—an estimated $25 million annually in housing subsidies that supports families throughout Lee County. City mayor Kevin Anderson presented a proclamation declaring March 3, 2025, as Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers Day.
Davis asked the council to continue partnership and support for the authority’s redevelopment efforts and emphasized the economic impact of recent awards and the authority’s role in neighborhood transformation projects such as Greater Dunbar. The presentation concluded with applause and a formal proclamation from the mayor.
