Council approves $100,000 grant for Eau Gallie Arts District Main Street program

The Melbourne City Council on March 25 approved a $100,000 grant funding agreement with the Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) Main Street program and authorized the city manager to sign the agreement.
Why it matters: EGAD requested an increase from $50,000 to $100,000 for Main Street programming. Cindy Dittmer, presenting for staff, said $50,000 was already allocated in the current-year budget and council approved using a $50,000 appropriation from a dedicated downtown (Eau Gallie) street-lighting fund to cover the remainder. Councilman LaRusso explained the additional $50,000 will be shifted from that specific lighting fund rather than general contingency.
Council discussion: LaRusso said the money is “already designated in the Eau Gallie downtown” fund and described the move as “shuffling the cards a little bit” within previously approved allocations. EGAD representative Kathy Elias spoke in support, thanking council and saying EGAD will seek other grants in future years and attempt to reduce future city funding requests. Elias said, “we will ask for less in the coming years so that we're not depending so much on taxpayer dollars.”
Vote and implementation: Council approved a revised resolution (No. 4338) and the grant agreement. Council directed staff to implement the grant and manage reporting and budget transfers necessary to move $50,000 from the downtown lighting allocation to the grant line.
Ending: Council members framed the award as both a near-term boost for downtown Eau Gallie programming and part of a longer-term plan to reduce dependency on general fund support by pursuing other revenue and grant sources.
