GADSDEN COUNTY — The Gadsden County School Board recognized 13-year-old Justin McNeely of James A. Shanks Middle School Wednesday after staff asked the board to provide the student a platform to present an essay he wrote for a Black History Month contest.
Board member Scott introduced McNeely and explained that he missed the contest deadline but staff wanted to honor his effort. "He said during the third 9 weeks he stopped following somebody in particular and as a result ... he started doing better," Scott said. McNeely read an essay about Judge Kathy Garner, a local jurist he identified as his inspiration. "I am a 13 year old youth that is trying to find my way in life," McNeely said while addressing the board.
Board members and staff praised McNeely's improvement and presented him with certificates and monetary awards. A staff member noted McNeely achieved one of the highest scores in a device configuration and management certification among students this year and presented a certificate. Board members said they hoped McNeely would serve as an example to other students.
Ending — The board invited McNeely’s parents forward, presented awards including monetary contributions that collectively approximated the prize discussed at the event, and urged the student to continue working toward his goals.
