School board approves three resolutions honoring community leaders and educators

The Miami Dade County School Board unanimously approved three board-member resolutions on March 19 recognizing local leaders and educators, the board chair said after a quorum was reached.

The resolutions honored Karen Leslie Leyva as the district’s 2025 Rookie Teacher of the Year runner-up; Alejandro Mendieta for community service; and Marilyn Hollifield for longstanding civic and legal contributions. Board members presented each honoree before the full board and a short public comment period for each item. The chair moved the three items (B‑4, B‑5 and B‑6) to the floor and members later voted to approve them during the regular meeting.

The recognition for Karen Leslie Leyva highlighted her work in English-language acquisition and special education, her classroom gains and professional training. Her husband, Christian Leyva, addressed the board in support, describing her preparation and classroom results. Board Member Joseph Geller presented the resolution and invited Leyva, her school principal and family to the dais for the proclamation.

The resolution for Alejandro Mendieta noted his civic involvement with local chambers of commerce, the Boy Scouts of America (South Florida Council), and several philanthropic awards. Mendieta spoke briefly, thanking teachers and his family, and board members praised his community service.

Marilyn Hollifield was recognized for a long legal and civic career; board remarks cited her legal leadership and contributions to education and the community.

Votes at a glance: the board moved each resolution to the floor and then voted to approve each item. When the resolutions were initially presented there was not a full quorum; the presentations were completed and the formal votes were taken later in the meeting once five members were present.

The recognitions were ceremonial resolutions; no policy or budget changes were associated with the agenda items.
