Sergeant Gretzel reported to the Janesville Alcohol License Advisory Committee that police conducted alcohol compliance checks on Dec. 17 and added several bars to that round of checks. Officers tested six bars; two — Eastpoint and Looking Glass — failed the compliance check. Sergeant Gretzel summarized the checks to the committee and said previous problem liquor stores rechecked during operations were found to be in compliance this round.
When asked what “failed” meant, the sergeant said checks typically involve whether staff requested identification and complied with licensing rules; in the failed cases officers documented noncompliance such as not properly IDing a person. The committee heard the calculation that six bars were checked and two failed (approximately 33 percent failure rate for that round).
The committee also heard from the clerk/treasurer’s office that the Blackhawk Curling Club is advertising a public Curlathon with an open bar scheduled Jan. 17–19. The clerk’s office said it would forward the information to the police department for compliance review and contact the county as part of follow-up.
Committee members praised licensed establishments that call police when disturbances occur and said officers are documenting that licensees generally cooperate in reporting incidents and maintaining required licenses and bartenders. The committee did not take formal action on the compliance results; staff noted ongoing enforcement and documentation by police.
