Council approves two liquor licenses; Level Up Golf Academy wins conditional approval

Level Up Golf Academy: The council approved a motion to grant a Class B (beer-only) license to Level Up Golf Academy at 3410 Bell Street, Suite 110, on a 4–2 vote. The motion placed a condition that beer be stored in a locked cooler, with staff required to unlock the cooler only to serve customers and to relock it afterward. The application drew questions at the Alcohol Licensing Commission about the store’s floor plan, staffing and how alcohol would be secured; applicant Michael Taberts said he and one subcontractor would staff the operation and that they could secure the cooler if required. President Marshick and Council Member Squire voted no; Vice President Burdick and others voted yes.
Santa Maria Supermarket: The council approved a separate liquor-store license limited to the liquor-store area of Santa Maria Supermarket. Council members clarified that the liquor store must have its own suite number and that alcohol storage would be within the liquor-store area; if the applicant later sought to store alcohol in the grocery receiving area, they would need to amend the license. That motion passed 6–0.
Both actions were taken after discussion at the licensing commission and review by staff; council also discussed whether the locked-cooler condition had precedent and were told the city has authority to impose such conditions in unique circumstances.
