Volunteers and partners credit Janesville’s Palmer ‘Pump’ bike park for regional draw

Members of the Janesville Velo Club presented an overview of the Palmer Urban Mountain Bike Park, known as the Pump, during the council’s Jan. 13 meeting.
Club representative Paul Murphy said the Pump was funded through a mix of private and nonprofit donations alongside city support for the final phase. He said professional trail builder Trail Works completed the design and that the project includes approximately 3.1 miles of off‑road trail. Murphy listed contributors including Michael Cycles, Rock Trail Coalition, Janesville Velo Club, Janesville Generations Fund, and multiple foundations and private donors. He said four of five planned phases are complete and that the city constructed the final phase, including a 10‑stall paved parking lot and a pump track.
Murphy and fellow ambassadors noted the facility attracts riders from northern Illinois and surrounding areas. They said the final skills area is estimated at about $50,000 and the committee hopes to complete it in 2025. The presentation included historical notes on the park’s ribbon-cutting in October 2024, which drew roughly 200 attendees, and described community engagement including first responders testing access and safety considerations.
Council thanked the presenters; no council action or funding request was taken at the meeting.
