The Janesville Common Council unanimously approved a resolution recognizing Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Resolution 2025-2294 passed 6-0 during the council’s Jan. 13 meeting.
The measure, read aloud by the clerk, praised Dr. King’s leadership and urged residents to honor his legacy through service and acts of kindness. Council Member Jackson, who said he is “a huge fan of Martin Luther King” and recounted visiting Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, moved the resolution. The clerk called the vote and President Marshick announced the 6-0 result.
After the vote, Amy Levy of the YWCA accepted the proclamation on behalf of the organization and invited the public to a Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration at Blackhawk Technical College on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 2–4 p.m. Levy credited Coretta Scott King’s efforts in establishing the national holiday and described the YWCA Rock County as the event’s lead organizer.
The council took the proclamation under the recognition portion of its agenda; no formal debate or amendments were recorded.
