The Ottawa City Commission on March 5 approved a $43,417.65 expenditure to replace the Ottawa Memorial Auditorium's exterior 1,200-amp service panel after staff determined the existing panel is beyond repair.
Director Tiffany Evans told the commission that staff first discovered a failure in the phase contactor in September when four primary air conditioning units failed to power up. A temporary repair restored partial function but staff reported the panel is "past its useful life" and that replacement parts are no longer available. Evans said a custom-fabricated 1,200-amp panel is necessary to ensure reliable, code-compliant operation, especially during full-capacity events when air conditioning, sound and lighting equipment run simultaneously. Evans told the commission the custom fabrication will take approximately three months and the installation will require being offline for a couple of days.
Staff initially filed an insurance claim but withdrew it after the insurer offered only $1,400 because of depreciation. The total materials-and-labor estimate presented to the commission was $43,417.65. Commissioner Crowley noted the bid from Advantage Electric and commented on local contractors and non-profit considerations. The commission moved, seconded and approved the repair by roll-call vote; Mayor Allen and commissioners recorded "Yes."
