TDOT representatives informed the TPO that on March 11 the Federal Highway Administration reallocated unused TIFIA funding into Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) and Transportation Alternatives (TA) funds and indicated the state’s approximate share.
Matt Mazurvi, TDOT Planning representative, said Tennessee as a whole is set to receive about $34 million in additional STBG funds and roughly $4 million in transportation alternatives funds as a result of the reallocation. “Based on the formulas that we have seen, Tennessee is set to receive the state as a whole received about $34,000,000 in additional STBG funds and roughly $4,000,000 in transportation alternatives,” Mazurvi said.
Mazurvi noted the funding must be used before the end of federal fiscal year 2028 (September 30, 2028) and that larger MPOs would receive an estimated $1.7 million extra in STBG and roughly $215,000 in transportation alternatives. TPO staff said they will follow up with TDOT to clarify allocation details and implementation steps.
Board members asked for additional flow and distribution details; TDOT staff said they would provide follow-up information to the MPO when available.
