Matthew Bailey, speaking for the Tyler-based group East Texas Monarchs, asked the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees to release a written statement outlining how the district will protect undocumented students while on school grounds.
Bailey said he previously asked for a statement and that, in his view, the board had not responded. He referenced a case in Gainesville involving an 11-year-old he identified as Jocelyn Robo Carranza and described that incident as an example of the harm he said can follow from failing to communicate protections for undocumented students. Bailey told the board: “I asked the board this, do you want a dead child at Tyler ISD?” and urged trustees to “give the people that peace of mind.”
Bailey said Dallas ISD and Longview ISD had issued similar statements and asked why Tyler ISD had not. He closed by formally repeating his earlier demand that the district publish a clear policy or statement on protections for undocumented students.
The board did not announce a formal response or an action at the meeting; Bailey’s remarks were recorded during the public-comment period.
