San Juan County Council voted to approve a resolution declaring the intent to vacate and abandon Fairgrounds Road on San Juan Island, a short roadway the council said no longer functions as a public thoroughfare.
County engineer Colin Heinsmeier presented the item as a second-touch action to complete an earlier plan to transfer full administration of the fairgrounds property to the parks department. Heinsmeier said staff completed improvements at the fairgrounds over the last year and that vacating the road would allow park administration to manage the property without the road dedication in place.
Council members noted the road has gates at both ends and "does not even serve an actual road purpose," and that its prior designation as a county road primarily enabled use of county road funds for fairgrounds capital projects. One council member said the annual cost of maintaining the road was "about $500 a year." Heinsmeier and council members described additional procedural steps after the resolution, including an engineering report and planning review to ensure legal and public-access requirements are addressed.
The council moved, seconded and adopted the resolution by voice vote. No roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript; the record shows the motion carried by affirmative voice vote.
