City moves to finalize Griggs Park Trailhead playset; $4,600 fundraising shortfall noted

City staff asked the council to finalize a purchase agreement with Dakota Playgrounds for a new playground at the Griggs Park trailhead, saying the project was identified through a community survey and partially funded by donations.
Mr. King told the council the city previously accepted a donation of $1,007 from the AcreWalk family and set $75,000 from city funds toward the playground. After a community-requested change to use a concrete border instead of a black PVC border, a contractor estimate added about $9,000 and raised the project total to $82,624.64. King said additional pledged donations of about $1,000 reduce but do not eliminate a shortfall, which he estimated at approximately $4,600.
King said the AcreWalk family continues to fundraise and expects to close the gap; he recommended moving forward with the purchase and noted the playground will complement recent boat-ramp improvements. Council Member Pokczewski asked about dedication signage; King said staff are working with the AcreWalk family on a sign that would read along the city’s existing format (e.g., “in memory of David Acre”).
Council President Bridal Larson and other members expressed support for completing the project. King noted precedent for using Altru Partnership funds to close small gaps and suggested those funds could be an option if needed to complete the purchase agreement. The work session record does not show a formal council vote on the purchase during this meeting.
