City staff previews Habitat for Humanity partnership, Greater Minnesota Tier 2 grant application for high school land

City staff briefed the Little Falls City Council on March 17 about a proposed partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Little Falls High School and a potential grant application under the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency’s Greater Minnesota Small Cities Tier 2 housing aid program.
Alex, a city staff member, said Habitat for Humanity is seeking to purchase about 2.9 acres southeast of Little Falls High School from the school district. The proposed project would support up to eight homes and include a hands-on educational component in which students would build houses in the school workshop and the houses would later be moved onto the site for finishing and occupancy. Alex said the city would act as fiscal agent if the council approves staff applying for the Tier 2 grant and then donate the grant funds to Habitat for Humanity to carry out the program.
Staff said some final information remains outstanding and that they are still waiting for feedback on a few items, so the city does not yet have a resolution for approval. Alex told the council the staff and Habitat for Humanity intend to present a resolution and additional materials at the next council meeting for formal consideration.
No formal council action or vote occurred at the work session; the item was informational and will return for a vote when grant details and the draft resolution are complete.
