Committee moves pregnancy-accommodation and lactation policies to full board after consistency edits

Committee members reviewed Policy 05/28 (accommodation of pregnancy and related medical conditions for students), a proposed new personnel policy (528.1) addressing accommodations for employees, and Policy 528.2 covering lactation needs. Major edits discussed included replacing the term "modifications" with "reasonable accommodations" where the defined term applies, making the defined term "related medical condition" consistent across the documents, and aligning listed accommodation examples (frequent breaks, intermittent absences for medical appointments, counseling, accessible parking, etc.).
On lactation, committee members agreed to simplify terminology and use the phrase "person with lactation needs" throughout the policy and in the title; they explicitly rejected language requiring district-provided pumps and instead discussed reasonable accommodations such as temporary private space in each building and small refrigeration units for milk storage. Staff said identified lactation locations exist in district buildings and that mini-refrigerators or similar storage solutions could be supplied.
Members also discussed procedural details: moving definitions into a single definitions section, distinguishing practices or procedures that the district may adjust from accommodations offered directly to students or employees, and tracking whether an item is a policy (board-level) versus administrative practice. Committee members asked staff to standardize terminology and correct numbering/lettering in the drafts.
The committee moved all three items to the full board: Policy 05/28 on first reading, new Policy 528.1 (personnel accommodations) on first reading, and Policy 528.2 (accommodation of persons with lactation needs) on first reading. Motions passed by voice vote.
