The council’s Judiciary Committee presented Ordinance 25-20, an amendment to Chapter 937 of the city code that would change the City of Wilmington’s indigent burial policy. The ordinance raises the city’s maximum payment for indigent burials from $7.50 to $1,000.
Judiciary Committee members said the previous $7.50 maximum no longer covers costs and that the city works with funeral homes in a working relationship to manage indigent burials. Committee lead Council member Schlavaugh said he planned to have three readings on the ordinance at the meeting.
Council did not adopt the ordinance at the meeting; the item was introduced for consideration and scheduled for the statutorily required readings before any final vote.
