The Kansas Board of Regents on a special-call meeting approved a search committee and adopted a charge directing the committee to help find the next president of Pittsburgh State University.
Board Chairman Carl Ice opened the meeting and thanked members for attending on short notice. "We have a very important meeting as we move forward with the Pittsburgh State search," Ice said, and noted the board's intention to move efficiently.
Regent Blake Benson summarized the committee's charge and responsibilities, saying the panel will develop a presidential profile, ensure an unbiased and nondiscriminatory review of candidates, maintain confidentiality to protect the process and interested applicants, work with an executive search consultant, and present an unranked list of "anywhere from 4 to 5" top candidates to the board. "I can assure you there's no name in our neck of the woods ... that commands more immediate respect than Rick Webb," Benson said, expressing support for Rick Webb's leadership of the search.
Rick Webb, who the board named to lead the search committee, said he chaired the prior search three years ago and welcomed the opportunity to do so again. "I was honored to represent the board in chairing the search committee last time," Webb said.
Board members moved and voted on two formal items. Regent John Dicus moved to approve the search committee as formed; the motion was seconded by a speaker identified as Wen and carried by unanimous voice vote. Later, a motion to adopt the committee charge was moved and seconded by Kathy Wolfmore; that motion also passed unanimously.
Chairman Ice placed the actions in recent context, saying the prior Pittsburgh State search was announced in November and that a president was approved and installed less than five months later in early March. "We did it in less than five months," Ice said, noting the board's interest in a timely but thorough process.
The board did not set a fixed public timeline during the meeting; members emphasized selecting the right candidate while aiming to move efficiently. The committee will coordinate with the executive search consultant and report back to the Board of Regents with the unranked list of finalists for the board's consideration.
There was no other business before the board and the meeting was adjourned.
