City commission confirms several mayoral and commission appointments; discusses board vacancies

The Grand Rapids City Commission on March 25 confirmed multiple mayoral and commission appointments to advisory panels and discussed a list of remaining board vacancies.
The commission voted to confirm appointments including John Gornary to the Waste-to-Energy Advisory Committee, Jenna Lyons to the Historic Preservation Commission, Brooke Arnott to the Community Relations Commission and Andres Hernandez to the South Division Granville Avenue Corridor Improvement Authority. All motions were moved, supported and carried with verbal yes votes recorded by the chair.
The confirmations were short and largely procedural. During the Hernandez appointment, one commissioner noted Hernandez’s work with the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association following the departure of a prior community leader, saying he has “been doing awesome” since his hire and expressing support for his service on the corridor authority.
Commissioners then turned to a list of remaining board vacancies. The chair said she had circulated a message earlier that morning asking for suggestions for the Affordable Housing Fund Board and asked colleagues to review applicants submitted through the city’s volunteer process. Commissioners described targeted recruiting, including a search for an HR- and collective-bargaining–experienced candidate for the Civil Service Board; outreach to identify a First Ward appointee for the Mobile GR board; and efforts to identify candidates for a Third Ward appointment and a general commission appointment.
Staff said more board appointments would be presented at the commission’s next meeting and that commissioners Bosco and the chair would meet to further discuss additional commission appointments.
