Tom Green County Commissioners Court on Feb. 11 approved a $685,887.39 work order contract with Midtex of Midland to renovate the north restrooms at the courthouse.
The project, presented to the court as work order contract 134289 under the PACE job-order contract purchasing cooperative P00250, is intended to replace deteriorated cast-iron piping, add Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades and minimize disruption to court operations by scheduling night and weekend work. The court also approved an associated line-item transfer to fund the project.
Mister Aaron, presenting the project to the court, said the need has been identified "for many, many years" largely because of "the deterioration of the cast iron piping in the courthouse," and added that the proposal covers phased work in an occupied building and includes night and weekend schedules to avoid slowing court business. The packet included pricing, scope and plans prepared by an architect and engineer.
County staff told commissioners the contractor will mobilize about two weeks after award, city permitting will likely take about a month, and construction was estimated at about 28 weeks, with some flexibility to add Friday daytime closures if the court schedule permits to accelerate work. The court noted the building is nearly a century old.
The motion to approve the contract and associated transfers passed by voice vote. The court did not record a roll-call tally; the five-member court voiced approval.
