Broadwater County to post seasonal weight restrictions March 15 for rural roads

Broadwater County will reimpose seasonal weight restrictions on several rural roads starting March 15, the county public works director told commissioners at the March 12 meeting.
TJ Gravely, Broadwater County public works director, said the limitation is an annual measure meant to protect roads during spring thaw. "This was put into effect last year as an annual. This is just more of a reminder: this is coming effective March 15," Gravely said. He said signs will go up and enforcement will begin on or after March 15 and continue until the frost clears or May 31, whichever is later.
Gravely listed the roads currently targeted for weight limits: Filson Road (Highway 287 to Beavercreek), Roland Glen Ranch Road, Lone Mountain Road (Hausfelt to Hunsaker Corrals), Muddy Lane (Johnson Loop to 437), Highway 4307, Ferret Lane (Highway 285 to Muddy Lane), Ray Creek Road, and Flynn Lane (Dry Hollow to Nelson Road). He said exemptions will be made for propane deliveries, emergency vehicles and similar essential services.
Why it matters
Seasonal weight limits are intended to prevent heavy vehicles from accelerating spring damage to county roads when frost heaves and saturated soils make surfaces especially vulnerable. Gravely said some roads already show rapid deterioration and the county may amend the list if additional stretches start to fail.
Implementation
Signs will be placed before enforcement begins. Gravely said he will confirm the list is posted to the county website and may return to the commission with amendments if road conditions require additional restrictions.
