Jessica Bushnell, the Townsend and Three Forks Mosquito District noxious-weed coordinator, asked the Broadwater County Board of Commissioners to approve filling a full-time assistant lead coordinator position that had been authorized during the COVID-19 period but left vacant.
The board approved the request by voice vote after a motion and second. The posting will proceed, and county staff will work with Westaff and Dailene to post the job.
Why it matters: The assistant coordinator role is intended to lead summer crews, collect mapping data and perform landowner and subdivision site visits. In the off season the position will convert paper maps into ArcMap and EDMaps, assist landowners with grant writing, and support expanded education and outreach. Bushnell also said the new hire would be cross-trained to help the mosquito program with fogging and larval surveillance when needed.
Budget and staffing details: Bushnell told commissioners she had reviewed the budget with Bill Gerocchi and that the county can sustain the position. She said the funding will come from the noxious-weed budget (about 95 percent) and roughly 5 percent from the mosquito program and emphasized that “we don't need any new money” for the hire. Bushnell added the job is not entry-level and the county will seek a candidate with relevant experience. She said existing seasonal staff are expected to return, reducing onboarding disruptions.
Next steps: The board instructed staff to post the position and proceed with recruitment.
