The Trenton City Council on Feb. 6 swore in a newly hired police officer and took formal steps recognizing the promotion of Matt Rutherford to sergeant in the Trenton Police Department.
The council presiding officer administered the oath to the new officer during the presentation portion of the meeting. Council and staff noted the officer's local residence and prior law-enforcement experience. A staff speaker summarized the new hire’s background in law enforcement and training and said the officer relocated from Franklin and lives in Trenton.
The council also acknowledged the promotion of Matt Rutherford, who has served with the Trenton Police Department since 2017 after beginning his career at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. City staff described Rutherford’s prior assignment to a county narcotics unit and praised his performance; Rutherford’s wife participated in the pinning ceremony.
Councilmembers used the council comments portion of the meeting to welcome both officers and to highlight community programs and engagement. Councilmember Croucher invited residents to “Coffee with the Cop” the following morning at State Street Coffee in the Trenton Crossing Plaza as an opportunity to meet Trenton PD staff. Councilmember Montgomery described a recent medical emergency at her home, thanked the police and emergency medical technicians for a rapid response, and said she appreciated the department’s work.
No formal motion or ordinance was required for the swearing-in or the promotional recognition; both were undertaken as part of the presentations and council remarks.
The meeting later recessed into executive session for personnel and legal discussion, which the city manager had requested earlier in the agenda.
Looking ahead, council members said they expect continued community outreach events and noted the department’s role in planned public-safety and community programs.
