The Sycamore Community City Board of Education voted to approve the 2025 PreK'6, junior high, high school and athletic student/parent handbooks at a special meeting so the district can publish the materials before the April 1 registration portal opens.
Board member Dr. James moved to approve the handbooks and Mr. Gulick seconded; the roll call recorded ayes by Dr. James, Mr. Ballant and Mrs. Thinner (three board members recorded on the roll call at the meeting) and the motion carried.
District staff said getting the handbook published before April 1 prevents the district from having to re-contact families who already completed online registration. "What we got into last year is when the handbooks were released later than April 1, we had to then go back to all those parents who had already checked it off, and we had to go back to them to get them to re sign off on the new handbook," the presenting staff member said.
Board members raised a transparency concern about approving items in a special meeting rather than waiting for a regular meeting, and staff explained the April 1 timing and late arrival of related policies from OSBA forced a compressed schedule. Staff also said district web staff are working to embed the handbooks in the district website to make them easier for parents to find.
The board approved the handbooks on the motion recorded at the meeting. Staff said the district will post the handbooks in time for the student registration portal opening and monitor parent acknowledgement submissions.
