The committee moved a proposed three-year, $600,000 contract with McQueen Equipment LLC to formal session with a recommendation for approval after staff described the agreement and answered members’ questions.
The contract, listed as Contract 607087, covers construction-equipment maintenance and repair services including street-sweeper maintenance and repairs. Alex Weatherup, assistant director for the General Services Department (GSD), said the contract “is a new contract to replace our old sweeper repair and maintenance contracts.”
Committee members asked for basic contract details that were missing from the packet. Hillary Edwards of the Office of Contracting and Procurement told the committee the contract’s start date would be “upon city council approval” and the end date would be three years from that approval date. Weatherup said McQueen is the only authorized dealer for the city’s sweepers, and that the city operates 33 active street sweepers. He added the oldest vehicles in the fleet date to 2017 and that many commonly needed repairs — primarily replacement of wear parts such as brushes and the shoes beneath the sweeper — are not covered by manufacturer warranties.
Weatherup said some repairs are done at city garages but specialty repairs or capacity beyond the garage’s workload are referred to the vendor under a contract like this one. Committee members also asked whether replacement parts could be bundled with future sweeper purchases to reduce reliance on vendor service; staff said that some parts and repairs are handled in-house but specialty items will still be referred to the vendor.
After the discussion, the committee chair called for a motion to send the item to formal session; a motion was made, no objections were recorded, and the line item was placed on the agenda for formal council consideration.
The contract as described in the meeting packet lists McQueen Equipment, LLC, of Lake Orion, Michigan, a three-year term (to begin on council approval), and a total contract amount of $600,000. No vote on final approval was taken at this committee meeting; the action was to move the item forward for a formal session vote.
