Rumpke seeks 450 signups to launch Circleville curbside recycling; company outlines $6–$8 monthly pricing

Ryan King, representing Rumpke Recycling in Columbus, asked council for assistance reaching 450 signups needed to start a city curbside recycling program and gave council details on outreach and pricing.

“As of 9 a.m. this morning, we are currently 366 residents that have signed up for the program,” King said. He said the program’s threshold for launch is 450 signups. King described door‑to‑door outreach and a digital follow‑up effort and invited council members and staff to join neighborhood canvassing. He said weekly curbside pickup would cost $6 per month for current Rumpke trash customers and $8 per month for households that are not current Rumpke trash customers.

King said the project team had previously targeted a March 1 start date but missed that deadline; they are working toward a May 1 schedule and would prefer an earlier launch if the signup target is reached. He told council he and his communications director, Jeff Meyer, can provide outreach materials, signage and a web tool residents can use to check whether an item is recyclable.

Council members and the mayor suggested outreach opportunities including placing brochures and sign‑up sheets in local coffee shops, school outreach and attendance at community events. Tom Klitzka and other members said the mayor’s office and the city communications staff have been helping with the effort.

Why this matters: A successful rollout would move recyclables from drop boxes to weekly curbside pickup and could reduce material going to the landfill. King said curbside pickup would also serve residents who cannot transport recyclables to drop boxes.

No formal council vote was taken on the program during the meeting; Rumpke’s presentation was informational and council directed staff and the mayor’s office to continue outreach work with the company.
