Council approves plans, moves to advertise bids for 2025 street and utility project

City Engineer Chris told the council the project team held a neighborhood meeting on Jan. 8 to review plans with residents and that the plans and specifications are nearly complete. "So we did have a neighborhood meeting, on the January 8," Chris said. He told the council the city plans to begin advertising next week and open bids on Feb. 21, with an award expected at the council's March 3 meeting.
The current cost estimate for construction is about $5,100,000, which Chris said is consistent with the earlier feasibility report. At the neighborhood meeting, staff said roughly 18 to 20 residents attended and raised questions about trees; city staff explained that more than half of the trees in the area are ash and likely to decline over the next five years.
Chris and staff also discussed the bidding market. Staff reported there were 63 bid holders on a larger nearby project and about 20 prime bidders on that job, which they said bodes well for competition on upcoming bids. Staff noted earlier local projects received far fewer bids but that the number has increased over the last several years.
The plans and specifications for the 2025 Street and Utility Improvement Project were not included in the council packet because of their size, Chris said; the resolution authorizes proceeding to public advertising and bidding.
