Lemon Township trustee urges Monroe City Council to guard against piecemeal annexation

Michael Garver told the Monroe City Council on Feb. 11 that he is a lifelong resident of Lemon Township and asked the council to consider how to prevent the township from being reduced by piecemeal annexation tied to development and water access.
Garver said he spoke as a resident, not on behalf of the Lemon Township trustees. "I wear a hat of trustee for Lemon Township. Tonight, I'm gonna take that hat off, and I'm coming to you in presence of a resident of Lemon Township, and I want it on the record that I do not speak for Lemon Township Trustees," he said.
Garver recounted the township's historic size, saying Lemon Township was established in 1803 at about 36 square miles and has been reduced by annexations to less than three square miles. He said township residents rely on services from Monroe and urged the council to "find a path to coexist" so the township can remain intact. "Don't gobble us up piece by piece by piece," Garver said.
The council did not take immediate action on the comments. Garver's comments were recorded during the public-comment portion of the meeting; no formal referral or staff assignment was made on the record.
