Representative Barbara Ehart, District 33, presented RS 32,775 to the House State Affairs Committee, saying the request would add words to Title 16, chapter 20 to prevent awarding custody or placement to a parent who has been convicted of abusing other children.
Ehart said the change would address a limitation in current law she described as allowing custody decisions to consider only abuse against the child in question and not convictions for abuse of other children. She told the committee the language would apply when a parent has been convicted, not merely accused, of abusing other children.
There was no extended testimony or opposing witnesses recorded for the RS during this meeting. A motion to introduce the RS was made during the session and the committee approved introduction by voice vote.
The action was informational: the RS was introduced for possible future action and referral to a calendar; no statutory amendment was enacted at this meeting.
