San Diego Community Power board appoints Sean Sumner to La Mesa advisory seat

The San Diego Community Power Board of Directors approved the appointment of Sean Sumner to the Community Advisory Committee seat for the city of La Mesa at its March 27, 2025 meeting.
Board Chair Paloma Aguirre called the item and Jack Clark, chief operating officer, recommended the appointment, saying the CAC is advisory only and is intended to provide ongoing citizen engagement in the agency’s strategic direction. Clark said the CAC includes two members from each member agency and the board selects members by a simple majority vote.
Director Suzuki formally nominated Sumner; several board members spoke in support before the roll call. After the board vote, Sumner addressed the board and described a 24-year background in public service at the Port of San Diego and recent work as a consultant. “I try to bring partners together through complicated public‑private partnerships, economic development, and I love commercial real estate,” Sumner said, adding that he is an EV owner and supports the agency’s mission of affordable, clean power.
If approved, staff will complete an oath of office and onboarding before the next CAC meeting, scheduled April 10, and will update the publicly available CAC roster. Staff said as of the report’s drafting the city of Chula Vista seat remained vacant and applications remain open.
The appointment was adopted by a simple majority vote recorded by roll call.
