Transfer station reports slower activity, running small deficit; county exploring tire-handling equipment

Starr County transfer-station staff told the commissioners on Feb. 24 that activity at the facility has slowed in recent months and the operation posted a small year-to-date deficit.
A transfer-station representative said Grama Garbage has been taking most of its garbage to an alternative facility, reducing business at the county transfer station. The county's finance presentation later in the meeting showed transfer-station year-to-date revenues of $630,761 and total expenditures of $641,717, leaving a reported deficit of $10,956.
When a commissioner asked about used-tyre disposal at the transfer station, staff said they were researching machines, had sent requests to about three companies and expected to have information for the next commissioners court meeting.
No vote was taken on the transfer-station report; staff said they will return with vendor information on tire-handling options at a future meeting.
