Rowlett Arts and Humanities Commission recommends $7,000 in grants; new group awarded $350

The Rowlett Arts and Humanities Commission recommended awarding $7,000 in fiscal 2025 grants to local cultural organizations and schools and asked the City Council to place the recommendation on the consent agenda for its March 4 meeting.
Laura Turner, director of library services and liaison to the Arts and Humanities Commission, said the commission’s fiscal 2025 grant budget was $7,000 and that it allocated $1,900 to the Gary Alexander Arts and Education grants and $5,100 to cultural arts grants. "Gary Alexander is a former Arts and Humanities Commission member who was very passionate about supporting arts in our schools, and unfortunately, Gary succumbed to cancer while he was serving on the commission," Turner said.
The commission recommended funding four cultural arts applicants for the amounts they requested: Artist Round Texas, $1,750 (professional artist demonstrations, juror fees and awards tied to library exhibits); Rockwall Summer Musicals, $1,000 (planning and presentation of two musicals, including personnel, royalties, facilities, props and costumes, plus a performance or complementary tickets for Rowlett residents); and Rowlett Summer Musicals, $2,000 (costumes, stage set pieces and royalties, with a Rowlett Sings appearance). Millennial Maven Creative Foundation, a new organization that requested $3,000 to run a cross-cultural creative day for RHELA youth, was recommended for a reduced award of $350.
Turner said one condition of cultural arts grants is that recipients provide a free exhibit or otherwise serve Rowlett residents. For the Gary Alexander Arts and Education grants, the commission recommended awarding Rowlett High School $900 for color-printer ink and Giddens Stedham Elementary $1,000 toward its annual Hawaiian Waters Choir Competition.
A council member asked about the total and a staff member confirmed the grand total of recommended awards was $7,000. During the discussion a council member noted the grants are paid from a larger budget code; Turner confirmed the commission’s awards come from the city’s allotted grant budget.
The commission presented the recommendation at the work session and asked the council to place it on the March 4 consent agenda for formal approval.
