District outlines summer learning, credit recovery and kindergarten showcase; board members raise questions about virtual recovery

District staff presented a summary of summer learning opportunities for 2025 and a preview of the kindergarten showcase and staggered entry plan.
Summer programs: Dr. Catalano, a district staff member leading summer programming, told the committee the district will offer legislatively required summer reading camps for incoming first through third graders (three-week sessions), an ESL camp that runs concurrently with the reading camp, middle- and high-school credit recovery/"back on track" programs (largely virtual), CTE teamship and credentialing camps, an AIG enrichment camp for grades 3-6, and PrimeTime options for younger students. Dates cited included a June 9 or June 11 start for several programs and a three-week reading camp running through early July.
Credit recovery format and oversight: board members asked detailed questions about virtual credit recovery: eligibility rules, oversight, academic integrity and student outcomes. Staff said state policy requires a minimum eligibility threshold (the transcript referenced a 40/100 minimum for credit-recovery eligibility), that curriculum specialists design the online modules, and that the platform flags suspect completion patterns. Staff said many high schools provide in-person lab spaces and a facilitator during the school year and that summer arrangements vary; counselors determine whether credit recovery or repeating a full course is appropriate for each student. Staff noted last summer's credit-recovery activity included 286 credits recovered in the summer session cited.
Kindergarten showcase and staggered entry: the district's kindergarten showcase (orientation and registration outreach) will include two face-to-face orientation nights (April 22 and May 1), community outreach events, online registration resources in English and Spanish, and a staggered-entry schedule (traditional schools beginning Aug. 25; year-round schools with different dates) in which incoming kindergarten students attend in small cohorts for assessment and teacher assignment before full opening. Staff said orientation materials and registration guides will be posted on the district website and distributed in community outreach events.
Committee discussion: some board members expressed a preference for in-person alternatives to virtual recovery where feasible, citing concerns about accountability and whether virtual recovery yields the depth of learning needed for long-term success. Staff said they would explore additional monitoring measures and follow up with data on outcomes and participation.
Outcome: the update was received for informational purposes; no formal vote was required for the program descriptions presented.
