Pacific Grove Unified outlines residency, preregistration and placement priorities for TK and kindergarten

Pacific Grove Unified School District staff reviewed residency verification, preregistration and the district'level priority system used to assign students to TK and kindergarten.
Chief Business Officer Josh Jorn said the district is a "basic aid" district and that residency verification is handled through the assistant superintendent'level office. Official registration opens May 5; preregistration forms already provide the district with projected enrollment. "To attend our schools, you have to live within the boundary area," Jorn said, and he pointed families to an interactive trustee boundary map on the district website.
Registrar (site processing) staff member Allison/Cathlon explained what documents families must upload to ParentVUE to complete registration: a birth certificate, up'to'date immunization record, and two proof'of'residency documents (a current mortgage/property tax bill or signed lease plus a utility bill dated within the most recent 30 days). She said residency packets are screened at the site level and processed centrally before transfers or final placement are confirmed.
Adamson and other staff described the district'adopted priority list that guides placement when a site reaches capacity. At the meeting the district summarized the top priorities as (1) students who reside within the neighborhood school boundary and (2) students with siblings who reside in that boundary. Intra'district transfer requests (moving from one district school to another) are processed later and ranked lower on the priority list.
Class-size goals discussed at the meeting: TK classes are projected at 24 students per class; kindergarten goal is 25 students with a maximum of 27 and typically an instructional aide supporting the room. Staff cautioned preregistration counts are incomplete until residency is verified, and placements and any decisions to open additional classes are often made late in the summer (and sometimes after school starts) to confirm actual enrollment.
The district also said families will be notified of classroom assignments in June; Forest Grove will post class lists and hold a "meet and greet" often the Friday before school starts, with class lists posted around noon that day.
Ending: The district said it will publish the priority list and registration materials on the district and school websites, and families should complete preregistration and upload residency documents to ParentVUE ahead of the May 5 registration opening.
