The Sandusky City Commission on March 24 approved an ordinance authorizing the city manager to contract with Diamond Waterfronts to purchase and install replacement docks at the Shelby Street boat launch.
Parks staff described the existing docks as likely installed in 1986 and said the current structures are “well past trying to fix anymore.” The approved work covers the first five docks from west to east, including two launch docks, the Fire and ODNR dock and two courtesy docks; staff said the remaining dock with four or five fingers used by anglers is planned for replacement next year.
Parks staff said they will examine removed docks for salvage and potential scrap value. Installation timing depends on delivery and water level; staff said docks are usually installed by mid‑April to meet the first fishing tournament and that the department will either have the old docks or the new docks in place for early-season events.
The ordinance was adopted under suspension of rules and passed by roll call. Commissioners and staff noted the improved dock launching facility will allow keeping a more robust launch dock in the off‑season when conditions warrant.
The contract directs staff to purchase and install the EZ Dock system replacement compatible with other city launch docks; staff will finalize installation scheduling once the purchase is complete.
