The Missouri House Consent and House Procedure Committee voted 8-0 to approve House Resolution 929, allowing the Women Legislators of Missouri to use the House chamber for a scholarship award ceremony.
Representative Carolyn Caton, a freshman lawmaker who identified herself as representing District 33 (east to southeast Kansas City), introduced the request on behalf of the group and said the event will include a tea with the governor’s wife and will take “about an hour and a half.” Caton said organizers have identified 30 scholarship recipients and that recipients and the legislators who represent them have either been contacted or are being contacted.
The resolution drew a brief round of questions from committee members about logistics and attendee oversight. Chair Poucher asked a member to introduce herself and confirm details; Representative Caton responded that, as a freshman, she had filed the request to continue an event that had not been scheduled this year and that she would ensure rules were followed. A witness who identified themself as the State Public Advocate testified in support, calling it “a great worthwhile cause” and encouraging organizers to expand fundraising so more scholarships could be awarded.
There was no testimony in opposition; after the hearing the committee took a voice vote. Chair Poucher, Vice Chair Hovis, and Representatives Applebaum, Faulkner, Cabralow, Boseley, Sharp and Thompson each recorded “aye,” producing a final tally of 8-0 in favor of the resolution.
The resolution authorizes use of the chamber for the Women Legislators of Missouri’s scholarship presentation; it does not specify additional funding or appropriations. Committee discussion and testimony addressed event logistics and outreach to winners but did not establish further committee directions or contingency approvals.
Plans described at the hearing indicate 30 scholarship recipients will be presented individually at the ceremony. Organizers said recipients have been contacted or are in the process of being contacted; no list of recipient names or funding sources was provided to the committee record.
